Coal and Ash Shift Supervisor

Job Description

Supervise, control and co-ordinate coal plant and ash plant shift operational activities to ensure timely coal supply to power plant and effective ash evacuation from power plant in accordance with established schedules, quality, cost and time objectives. Responsible for safe start-up/shut down of the plant as per the Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Organise and ensure that coal and ash plant operations are carried out to the required standard with minimum risk to staff, machine and materials, and ensure compliance to safety and environmental standards at all times
  • Coordinate all activities jointly with the operations teams as well as the site contractors associated with fuel and ash management, and in compliance with safety rules and regulations
  • Have a complete understanding of the permit to work system applied to the plant and issue and cancel permits to work as per authorisation
  • Work with the operations shift team to ensure plant operations requirements can be met effectively
  • Oversee the main contracts associated with fuel and ash management from the transhipment including on site stockyard and coal delivery up to the bunker (inclusive of conveyers, towers and associated plant)
  • Oversee collection of coal and ash samples required for analysis by the chemist
  • Follow pre-set operational schedules to fulfil the planned production targets safely and efficiently
  • Coordinate all activities or changes in plant status with the day operations section head as necessary
  • Make necessary on the spot decisions to correct abnormalities or disturbances, seek additional support and advice as they see fit to enable the right decisions to be taken
  • Take corrective actions during a state of emergency and provide leadership to coordinate all activities as required
  • Supervise the interlock checks on start-ups, and supervise and support all plant testing, and also provide guidance and supervision during non-routine activities such as coal and ash plant preservation during periods of long shutdowns, and provide support during the outage period as and when required
  • Monitor the overall status of the coal and ash plant and summarise activities in the daily log. Keep up to date the daily plant status reports, and relay all activities that occurrence
  • Ensure that there is an effective and efficient coal and ash shift handover
  • Carry out annual performance evaluation of reporting for their team and ensure that regular review sessions are undertaken as per HR guidance for performance review
  • Prepare incident / accident reports and other reports required by the departments
  • Assist in the training and familiarisation of new team members and contactors
  • Identify and provide suggestions where plant improvements and modifications can improve the plant safe and effective operation and plant efficiency
  • Ensure Environmental Aspect-Impact and Hazard Risk Assessment are carried out, controlled and updated
  • Implement, monitor and report IMS objectives, Targets and programs
  • Report IMS performance to the management periodically
  • Ensure Environmental, Statutory, and Legal compliance with respect to their scope of activities
  • Ensure identification of root cause for the identified non-conformances/ deviations and to implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Review training requirements and identify competency gaps for their team and implement necessary actions to ensure that the team has all the required capabilities to perform their duties
  • Provide on-the-job training to new team members and regularly evaluate their OJT Performance
  • Identify hazards and areas of risk, and then document and implement control measures to reduce risk and eliminate hazards on the plant
  • Ensure problems and issues are clearly identified and monitored with operational controls implemented to ensure safe plant conditions
  • Take a proactive approach to safety and report ensure that all risks, incidents, and near misses are reported and acted upon
  • Make effective use of all resources available to deliver the agreed KPIs and operational objectives for the plant

Skills

  • Bachelor of Engineering
  • 8+ years in Coal fired Power plant operations specifically in fuel and ash management, ideally with jetty fuel delivery experience
  • Commissioning experience, and setting up operational systems and processes
  • Awareness of Quality, Occupational Health & Safety and Environment Management system principles
  • Knowledge of applicable legal requirements
  • Knowledge of spillage containment
  • Knowledge of managing HSE emergencies
  • Knowledge of identification, classification and disposal of waste
  • Should be well conversed with Coal and Ash operational activities
  • Knowledge of transhipment or ship-unloading operations at Jetty
  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Familiarity and experience of SAP
